Regulatory Status

Psilocybin is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. § 812). The FDA has not approved psilocybin for any medical use.

In Colorado, psilocybin is authorized for therapeutic use under the Natural Medicine Health Act (Proposition 122, Article 170, Title 12, C.R.S.). Natural medicine services are regulated by the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA), Office of Natural Medicine. Rules: 4 CCR 755-1.

Scope of Services

Natural medicine facilitation is not medical treatment. Facilitators do not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or condition. Services complement but do not replace traditional medical care.

Under Colorado's Natural Medicine Health Act (Proposition 122), the state established a "Clinical Facilitator" category specifically for licensed behavioral health professionals — including Licensed Clinical Social Workers — who bring their clinical training and expertise into the facilitation of natural medicine sessions. Laurel Tropeano holds both an LCSW license and a Natural Medicine Facilitator in Training (NMIT) credential. These credentials work in concert: her clinical background in social work informs the depth, safety, and care of her facilitation practice, while the NMIT credential authorizes the specific work of natural medicine facilitation within a licensed healing center. This integrated approach reflects how Colorado's regulatory framework was designed — to ensure that qualified clinicians can offer their full professional competence in service of this work.

No Guaranteed Outcomes

Experiences and outcomes vary significantly between individuals. No specific results can be guaranteed. Scientific research on psilocybin is ongoing and investigational. References to clinical studies on this website are for educational purposes only and do not constitute medical claims or endorsements.

Confidentiality

Facilitators maintain confidentiality standards per 4 CCR 755-1 (Rule 6.4).

Exceptions to confidentiality include:

  • Risk of harm to self or others
  • Mandatory reporting (child abuse, elder abuse, dependent adult abuse)
  • Court orders
  • Law enforcement investigations

Clinical Facilitators who hold secondary licenses (such as LCSW) may have additional obligations and protections under those licenses.
